As part of ongoing efforts to refine and advance the Agricultural Equipment Fabrication Policy for Oyo State, a high-level stakeholders’ meeting was held at the Oyo State Secretariat. This crucial discussion brought together key players in the agricultural sector, underscoring a collective commitment to strengthening local equipment fabrication and fostering agricultural development in the state.

The meeting was attended by the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, alongside Heads of Departments (HODs) from the ministry, academics, representative of agricultural equipment fabricators, and other relevant stakeholders. In his opening remarks, the Commissioner welcomed all participants and reaffirmed his dedication to policies that will drive sustainable agricultural growth.

Dr. Benjamin Oyelami, PiLAF’s Policy Communication Manager, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the Proposed Policy Document for Agricultural Equipment Fabrication. He outlined the process that led to the document’s development, highlighting the diverse range of stakeholders involved and the various stages the policy had undergone.

Following the presentation, stakeholders engaged in an insightful discussion, offering critical input to refine the policy. Among the key suggestions raised were the necessity of a well-structured regulatory system to support local fabricators, strategies to encourage indigenous innovation and reduce reliance on imported machinery, and the importance of addressing financial constraints faced by fabricators.

Participants also identified several pressing challenges that continue to hinder the growth of local fabricators. These included limited access to funding, a decline in interest among young people, shortages of trained personnel, and difficulties in sourcing raw materials.

In his closing remarks, the Commissioner commended PiLAF and all stakeholders for their dedication to the policy development process. He acknowledged the valuable contributions made during the meeting, requested that the steering committee address some of the concerns raised, and assured attendees that necessary actions would be taken. Furthermore, he committed to presenting the revised policy to the State Executive Council as part of the next steps toward its implementation.

The meeting marked a significant step forward in ensuring a robust policy framework that will enhance agricultural equipment fabrication in Oyo State. PiLAF remains dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders to drive impactful policies that support agricultural development and innovation.
