PiLAF Brown Bag Explores Digital Solutions for Post-Harvest Management and Market Access
The 19th edition of the PiLAF Brown Bag Series convened researchers, policymakers, development practitioners, agribusiness professionals, and other stakeholders for an engaging discussion on “Digitized Post-Harvest Management: Building Smart Aggregation Networks for Market Access.” As PiLAF’s bimonthly knowledge-sharing platform, the Brown Bag Series continues to foster dialogue and collaboration on critical issues shaping Nigeria’s agricultural and food systems.

The session featured Saheed Adams, an agribusiness and supply chain expert, who highlighted the urgent need to rethink post-harvest management through the adoption of digital technologies and smart aggregation systems. He emphasized that post-harvest losses are not merely a production challenge but a systemic issue requiring stronger coordination among farmers, aggregators, buyers, financiers, researchers, and policymakers.
Drawing from practical experience, the presentation demonstrated how digital tools can synchronize supply with demand, improve product quality, enhance traceability, and connect farmers to structured and more profitable markets. The discussion also underscored the importance of data-driven decision-making, standardized sorting and grading, cold-chain infrastructure, and collaborative partnerships in building efficient and resilient agricultural value chains.

An interactive question-and-answer session enriched the conversation as participants explored practical approaches to reducing post-harvest losses, strengthening cold-chain logistics, improving quality standards, expanding value addition, and creating enabling policies for sustainable agricultural development. The exchange reinforced the shared responsibility of all actors in building smarter, more inclusive, and market-oriented food systems.
The session concluded with a renewed call for collaboration among stakeholders to leverage innovation, data, and strategic partnerships in transforming Nigeria’s agri-food system. Through the Brown Bag Series, PiLAF remains committed to promoting evidence-based dialogue, knowledge exchange, and practical solutions that advance agricultural transformation, food security, and sustainable development.
