On July 2, 2024, the Innovation Lab for Policy Leadership in Agriculture and Food Security (PiLAF) organized a pivotal stakeholder consultation at the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) in Abuja, Nigeria. The primary goal was to develop the Nigeria Fertilizer Roadmap, a strategic document aimed at guiding the country’s fertilizer industry towards sustainable growth and enhanced agricultural productivity. This consultation was part of the Sustain Africa project, funded by Purdue University and led by the Africa Network of Agricultural Policy Research Institutes (ANAPRI). As the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy Research, Capacity, and Influence (PRCI) approaches its fifth-year milestone, anticipation is building for the second in-person Global Gathering in Washington, DC, from March 6-8 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. This unique event will bring together PRCI partners from the United States, Africa, and Asia, as well as USAID personnel and collaborative partners to assess the Lab’s components, delve into empirical research findings, and engage in insightful discussions on applied policy research.
In the realm of agriculture and food security, inclusivity is not merely a buzzword; it is a fundamental necessity. Inclusive agricultural and food security policies are founded on the principle that every individual has a stake in decisions that affect them. Regardless of people’s status, they should have access to nutritious food and the means to produce it. These policies address the challenges faced by marginalized groups such as smallholder farmers, women, indigenous communities, and rural populations.
The role of research cannot be overstated as a catalyst for informed policy decisions. Rigorous research serves as the bedrock upon which policies are built, providing the necessary evidence and insights to address complex societal challenges. Policymakers armed with robust data are better equipped to navigate the intricacies of decision-making and develop solutions that stand the test of time.
Creating an inclusive agricultural and food security policy is very important. A robust and dynamic agricultural policy begins with research. This research serves as the cornerstone, offering an understanding of the current realities, diverse challenges and opportunities, ranging from the needs of communities to market trends and sustainable agricultural practices. Fostering a research-driven approach enables policymakers to make informed decisions that address the unique challenges faced by different regions and demographics. This explains why the Innovation Lab for Policy Leadership in Agriculture and Food Security (PiLAF) has been strengthening capacity in research and data analysis.
The Innovation Lab for Policy Leadership in Agriculture and Food Security (PiLAF) shines as a beacon of expertise and influence. Established in 2020 as part of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security, PiLAF has rapidly become a pivotal player in shaping inclusive and sustainable agricultural and food security policies in Nigeria. PiLAF’s key objective is to influence the agricultural policy process by fostering research, capacity development, and collaboration among all stakeholders within the agri-food system.
The program titled, Oyo State Agricultural Stakeholders Meeting, held on the 29th November, 2022 at the Seminar Room of the International Conference Center of University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria had in attendance stakeholders from the mainstream to the downstream value chain of the agribusiness in the state. The programme was geared towards bringing different stakeholders in the agricultural sector to discuss issues relating to fabrication.
